How to protect your energy during the holidays

How to protect your energy during the holidays

Transcript

Hello. I’m Rebecca -Anuwen, I’m delighted you’re here.

How to protect your energy during times of stress or overwhelm

Today I want to talk about a way to protect your energy.

When things around us are getting too much, particularly this time of year, and we’re talking about the un-should holiday season, and mayhem can be all around us.

Expectations and  ‘Should’s’ can leave you feeling exhausted

Whether it’s adverts telling us how you should behave right now, what you should be doing with your time, what a festive season should look like.

Now, I’m talking about festive season right now, because that’s when I’m recording this video, in December. However, this is good for any time you feel overwhelmed, any time you just feel like you can’t make a decision or things just feel too much.

The one simple practice you need to protect and maintain your energy

And it’s an exercise that I’ve taught many, many hundreds of people and it’s called the ‘purple bubble’.

It’s quick, easy and fun

The reason I use the idea of a bubble is because it’s fun and it’s playful. It’s like, who doesn’t have lovely memories of blowing bubbles. I’m 45 and I still love playing with bubbles in the garden with my little boy. It’s just brilliant. They’re so fun, and light and they’re playful.

And I want you to remember that in this moment of overwhelm, when things can feel too much and you just feel tired and exhausted, and that your energy is being pulled all over the place, to remember that actually you can come back to your sense of lightness. That you can come back to your sense of laughter and play, and you can do that from a very grounded place too.

Here’s how to do it

So imagine there’s a purple bubble around your body, it doesn’t matter if you can’t feel it or see it, just imagine that it’s there.

You we have this beautiful space around you. We use purple because we’re tapping into something called the violet flame of transformation.

And what that does, it’s like protective force field around your energy.

You want that bubble to be as close to you as feels comfortable.

Making it work for you

Now, some people like their bubble’s quite wide. Sometimes that feels really spacious for people, but sometimes it actually feels like there’s too much space there.

And so some people want it quite nice and snug.

So notice where feels good for you. And just move it, it’s your bubble. You can move it wherever you want.

As a little boy once said to me, “but what if it pops” and you have to remember, this is a magickal bubble and it’s not going to pop.

But also it doesn’t constrict you.

Your bubble has that element of movement. Which is why I also like the idea of bubbles, you know, bubbles have that kind of like oily sheen on the outside and they just seem to be naturally moving.

It’s so quick and easy you could try it now

So I want you to just imagine that purple bubble around you and just sit wherever you are, or stand or lie down wherever you happen to be right now, wherever you’re comfortable and just feel that bubble around you.

As natural as breathing

This bubble is a very protective space, but equally I like to see it more, more as a living being around us, more like our lungs. I like to imagine they’re like energetic lungs. So we breathe in and then we exhale what we don’t need. We bring in the nourishment we need and we exhale what we no longer need in our body.

And so I want you to see your purple bubble like this. I want you just to sit still for a moment. Just focus on your breathing. Breathing in deeply and exhaling fully.

Call back your energy from any drama

And then notice your purple bubble. Do the same. So as you breathe in it calls back your energy from wherever it’s been left and it comes back through your purple bubble, cleansed and cleared for your highest good.

Maybe there’s been an argument.

Maybe there’s a disagreement.

Maybe there was somebody telling you, you have to do it like this and you don’t want to, but you still feel agitated about it.

Just gently feel those strands coming back in with your breath. Just breathing in. And as they come through your purple bubble, they’re cleansed and cleared for your highest good.

So you can just bring your energy back to you very simply with your breath.

Gently releasing what’s not yours

And then when you exhale all of that overwhelm, all of that ‘stuff’ that you have in your energy system, breathe out.

Again, let that purple bubble just draw out what no longer serves and supports you.

Breathe out through that purple bubble, cleansing and clearing it as you give it back to the universe, it’s cleansed and cleared for the highest good of everybody involved.

And then breathe back in again, just bringing back the energy.

You don’t have to force it.

Just like breathing, it just happens naturally.

Your attention amplifies your power

But when we bring our attention to our breath. We breathe in deeper and exhale fully.

The same with our purple bubble. It’s always there holding our space, but when we bring attention to it, it does its job better and more efficiently because you’re now giving it extra support with your attention.

You can do that for as long as feels comfortable. Again, not forcing the breath, just with your natural breath.

Breathing in and calling back your energy.

And exhaling, letting those shoulders drop and just creating that space with your breath by breathing out. Exhaling, and dropping your shoulders, relaxing the jaw, softening the eyes.

The exhale is more important right now because we want you to come back to your own centre. And it’s really hard to do that when you’re buffered around by everyone else’s drama around you.

Leaving you feeling more centred

So once you feel a bit more relaxed and centered, just notice that purple bubble around your edges again. And know that it’s your protection. It’s your boundary between you and the world around you.

It’s not there as a defensive wall, like a five-foot-thick fortress around you trying to keep everything out.

But it’s a relationship with the world around you. It’s like your energetic immune system.

Bringing awareness to what’s actually yours and what ‘drama’ belongs to other people

When something comes towards you and you’re like, ‘that’s not mine’, so it doesn’t come in and unduly influence you.

And if it is yours, it comes through your purple bubble, but it comes through cleansed and cleared. Filling you up and nourishing you for your highest good.

So as you go about this festive time, and your daily life, every so often just connect with your purple bubble.

So if someone’s having a ‘bit of a moment’ and you don’t want to get involved, just feel your purple bubble protecting you, holding your space, reminding you of what’s yours and what’s not with our energetic immune system.

Always just checking:

‘Is that my drama?’

‘Is that my emotion?’

Oh, actually,

‘I’m protecting my energy.

‘I’m keeping my power for me. I’m keeping my energy for me.’

‘I’m choosing not to react.’

‘Instead, I’ll just sit here and I’ll take a moment or gather my thoughts. And then I will respond in a way that feels good instead of adding fuel to the fire that’s already lit’.

And so it just gives us that moment just to check in with yourself.

Giving you space to get clarity

It gives you that moment physically, but it also gives you that moment energetically to create space.

Because often when time gets busy, it can feel like everything’s in our face and we don’t have time.

It can feel like you’re trying to run to catch up with yourself, but when you can take a moment to pause, just to settle your energy, feel that loving support, that nourishment around you. It can just feel like you’re pushing everyone else’s stuff away and  out of your energy system. Giving you a moment to pause.

It gives you a moment to breathe and come back to your own centre so you can make your decisions from a calmer, clearer space.

I hope you find that helpful.

Come over into our community and let us know when you use the purple bubble and how did it change your energy?

It’s not just for the holidays

I know many, many people that use this and it’s a really, really powerful way for them just to come back to their own energy.

You can use it in any situation. I’m talking about having an un-should festive season right now, because that’s where we are. But at work if you’re going into a meeting and you know it’s going to be tense, put that purple bubble around you.

Take a moment.

When you go into the city or when you’re going somewhere when you feel like you just need to stay grounded, put that purple bubble up. Feel that protection around you.

If you like hugs, imagine it’s like a hug around you. If you prefer your personal space imagine it more like a shield around you, just holding you, safe, holding your energy steady, helping you to maintain your energy and just keep any nonsense out.

10 ways to rest and restore your energy

10 ways to rest and restore your energy

We live in a world that talks in the language of energy.

When people are feeling great and have lots of energy, they might use words to describe themselves, such as:

  • energised
  • charged
  • full
  • activated
  • having a bounce or spring in their step
  • firing on all cylinders

But when people are not at their best and have low energy, they can describe themselves as feeling:

  • burnt out
  • exhausted
  • depleted
  • drained
  • running on empty
  • worn out

This is because we’re energetic beings.

We need to recharge our energy systems, and we do this through RESTorative practices.

We live in a world that wants us to keep going. It celebrates how much we can do and produce.

Busyness is applauded as some kind of virtue (it’s not!) and it can be used to measure a warped idea of success or personal importance.

But we’re not designed to go on, and on, and on, and on…

People often try, and they may get away with it for a while, perhaps even years, but soon the cracks start to show and eventually something happens to make them stop, rest and review their choices.

We need to stop, to pause, to rest, replenish and nourish ourselves.

It’s not a ‘nice’ thing to do. It’s essential.

Yes of course action is important, but so is the need to rest.

Signs you need to top up your energy

If you find yourself feeling or experiencing any of the following, you need to prioritise rest:

  • Feeling lethargic
  • Being forgetful
  • Feeling grumpy or ‘out of sorts’
  • Making mistakes
  • Withdrawing from things, or people, you care about
  • Waking up feeling tired
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Feeling a lack of purpose or direction in your life
  • Frequently feeling ‘off’ or even getting sick
  • Having difficulty making decisions, and sticking to them
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself

How to rest and restore your energy

I’m going to share with you 7 types of rest and 3 types of nourishment that you need to consider if you want to avoid overwhelm, exhaustion and burnout, or generally just feel much better about yourself and life.

You don’t need to do all of them!

You’re probably already good at some of them.

  ACTION

As you read through the 10 types of rest and nourishment, notice which ones you’re already doing, and which you could benefit from the adding to your regular routine.

Here are the 10 ways you can rest and restore your energy

The first 7 are different types or rest – activities that you need to pause and take a break from.

Followed by 3 are areas of your life that need to be nourished – areas where you need to do or add something in order to rest and restore your energy.

In a world that glorifies ‘busyness’ we can often see not being busy as being lazy.

But it’s not.

The opposite of busy isn’t lazy.

The opposite of busy is meaningful connection. It’s deep rest and nourishment. It’s presence.

Your body needs to have time to stop being active.

It’s easy to slip into the habit of burning the candle at both ends, running from one appointment to the other. Adrenaline fuelling your body instead of life.

In amongst all of the activities of life, here’s some ideas to give your body a rest:

  • Gently stretch your body. Allow it to uncurl from the sitting, driving, carrying and lifting.
  • Massage your body and say affirmations to thank your body for all that it does.
  • You could even massage your body with an enchanted oil to energise or soothe your muscles.

Our minds are on the go all the time. Thinking, trying to solve something, even second-guessing ourselves.

Tasks often merge from one to another, we can even find ourselves mindless scrolling or staring at a screen trying to force yourself to work.

In amongst all of your thinking and learning, here’s some ideas to give your mind a rest:

  • Take rests from focused tasks.
Set a time limit for a task. Then take a 5-minute break. And then go back to your task.
  • If you work for yourself, or from home, make sure there’s a clearly defined ‘end’ to your work day.
  • Step into nature and let your eyes focus on something in the distance – this is particularly important if you’ve been sat in front of a screen for a period of time.
  • Hum, sing or whistle your favourite chant or song.
  • If you have to stay at your desk, give yourself a few minutes to look away from your screen and daydream about something you’re passionate about or visualise an intention you’re working on.

From an early age we’re often taught not to make a fuss or not to be too loud, too opiniated or too much. This can make it hard for people to express how they truly feel.

Yet it’s essential to express how you’re honestly feeling, or the pent up, repressed emotions can leave you feeling frustrated and undermine your self-esteem.

In amongst all of the many, many feelings of life, here’s some ideas to give your emotions a rest:

  • Talk to a trusted friend or a therapist, if you have access to one.
  • Journal. It’s a great way to explore your emotions and uncover what you’re really feeling. Helping you to get clear on what you actually need to do and focus on.
  • Write down how you’re feeling, or write an (unsent) letter to a person or situation that’s bothering you, don’t send the letter, but burn it somewhere safe and suitable. Let your emotions be transformed by the fire.

All day, every day, each activity, interaction and task you do creates an energetic exchange. These invisible ways that we spend our energy can leave us feeling drained without even realising what’s happened.

It’s essential that you learn to be intentional with where you spend your energy, as the phrase goes: ‘When attention goes, energy flows’.

In amongst the many millions of interactions you have, here’s some ideas to give your energy a rest:

The Importance of Energy podcast episode

In this episode I talk about the importance of your energetic health. You may look after your physical body, but if you don’t look after your energy too, it’s like you take two steps forward and one step back, and you’re left feeling frustrated at doing all the ‘right’ things, but not getting the outcomes you desire.

Throughout much of life we have learned to ask: ‘who do I need to be in this situation to be accepted or loved?’

This can lead to a lifetime of taking on roles or wearing masks to ‘fit in’.

Sometimes it’s handy, most of the time it just hides the truth of who you are.

In amongst all of the expectations placed upon you, here’s some ideas to give yourself a rest:

  • Take a break from being the good girl, the people pleaser, the ‘fixer’. Stop being a chameleon or all-things-to-all-people and let yourself simply be.
  • Get clear on who you are and what’s important to you.

In my book ‘Magickal Knickers and other ways to create a life of intention – Reclaim the Magick of You’ I share how we can create a life on our own terms, a life that celebrates who we are, and that it can start simply by consciously choosing your knickers.

Magickal Knickers podcast episode

As fun as it can be meeting people, visiting places and having new experiences, sometimes you just need to slow down and not expend all your energy.

In amongst all of the demands placed upon you from others, here’s some ideas to give yourself a rest:

  • Choose to spend more time with people that really nourish you and celebrate you for exactly who you are.
  • And if you’re an introvert, ensure you have time alone to recharge.
  • Use the magick of your words, cast a ‘spell’ of ‘no’ as you decline an invitation to prioritise your energy turning inwards to focus on restoring you.

All day long our senses are taking in everything around us. What we see, hear, smell, taste and feel.

As well as what we think of as our traditional five senses, these senses are becoming more refined as we become more attuned to the world around us.

We sense and pick up on so much more both physically and intuitively.

In amongst all of the ‘noise’ of life, here’s some ideas to give your senses a rest:

  • Take a break from bright lights and loud noises.
  • Close off your notifications on your devices that are designed to catch your attention.
  • Step into the void and surrender to the darkness by resting your senses.
Close your eyes or put on an eye mask. Turn off the any sounds, or wear earplugs or noise cancelling headphones. Lay down and put a blanket over you. And just allow yourself to surrender to the darkness. To deeply rest and be held in the dark.

There are three types of nourishment that work alongside your rest to restore your energy. They involve you doing something, rather than taking a break from something:

What spiritual practices do you have that allow you to connect with ‘something bigger’ than the everyday normalcy of life?

Perhaps these are individual practices or practices you do with a community.

Ways to nourish your spirit include:

  • Singing, prayer, performing rituals, or sharing stories.
  • Volunteering for something that’s important to you.
  • Focusing on doing an activity that fulfils your sense of purpose.
  • Choose your favourite visualisations or meditations. Remember the meditation isn’t to still your mind, but to rest it.
  • Take a walk in nature and be in awe of her beauty and the complexity of connections between everything.
  • Draw an oracle card or use some other form of divination to tap into your intuition and the messages from your higher self.

It’s all too easy to lose touch with what’s important to you. Caught up in the should’s and expectations of your family and friends, of your culture and the society around you.

Ways to nourish your truth include:

  • Taking some time to notice what beliefs and values are yours, and which have been inherited or absorbed from the world around you.
  • Ensuring that your actions, and the way that you spend your time, energy and resources are aligned with your true needs, desires and values (and not just what you think you should do).
  • Create a magickal life philosophy.
This is an exercise I take people through from my book ‘Magickal Knickers and other ways to create a life of intention – Reclaim the Magick of You
Essentially you’re creating your own rules for living your life. A life that aligns with your actual values and the things that are important to you.

Create a magickal life philosophy podcast episode

Expressing yourself in a creative way is essential to your well-being.

It’s not about being good at something, but allowing yourself the freedom to create something.

Ways to nourish your creativity include:

  • Art, writing, cooking, singing, pursuing a hobby, anything that appeals to you.
  • Creating something for the joy of the creative process, not for the finished product, you might not even finish what you’re creating.
  • Craft something to be used in your magickal workings.
    • A mini-altar broom made out of herbs.
    • Enchanted bath salts.
    • Black salts to protect your energy and space.
    • Your very own oracle deck, drawn, painted or collaged.
    • Decorating your own candles for your magick.

Experiment with the types of rest and ask yourself:

    1. How did I feel during the rest, did you enjoy it?
    2. How did I feel after the rest, did it nourish or recharge you?

You might find you need to focus on one area more than others to support how you feel or what you’re experiencing in your life at any given time.

If you haven’t found something that you enjoy or that leaves you feeling recharged, keep trying more things.

Keep experimenting until you find what works for you.

Rebecca, why haven’t you spoken about sleep?

The other day I wrote about why so many people are feeling more tired than a good night’s sleep will fix, because sleep by itself isn’t enough to feel rested and restored.

If you take sleep out of the equation, how much rest are you actually getting?

    Rest isn’t sleep.

Rest isn’t about sitting down and doing nothing, well… not all the time.

Rest is taking a sacred pause from your everyday activities and giving yourself a moment to reset and recharge yourself.

    Sleep vs Rest

To feel more energised you need to, of course, have some good quality sleep, but you also need to rest too.

When you sleep your body physically repairs itself, helps you recover from illness, and process the day you’ve had.

Whereas rest promotes physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Both sleep and rest are essential for you to feel more alert and energised.

Sleep is essential for the quality of your health and well-being and rest is essential to improve your quality of life.

You can try and get by on little sleep, or poor quality sleep, and you can dismiss rest as lazy, indulgent or not needed, but the effects will eventually catch up with you.

Lack of sleep and lack of rest will eventually lead you to feeling exhausted and burnt out.

    Now over to you

Ideally you’ll have a balance of the 10 ways to rest and restore your energy across your life, that’s the ultimate goal.

    But start where you are.

    Focus on just one area.

What’s one area of rest or nourishment that you could focus on right now?

If you’re not sure, what intuitively feels like the place to start.

Still not sure? Which one feels like the easiest?

We’re not aiming for any kind of perfection. In this case done is better that waiting for the right time.

Remember: if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing badly.

    • A 30 second stretch, is better than none.
    • Stepping away from your desk for 1 minute, is better than not.
    • Journaling one sentence is better than writing no words.

Start where you are, but start.

You might find yourself already prioritising one type of rest, but you need to weave all 10 restorative practices throughout your life.

And to make it more fun, for each type of rest, I’m also going to suggest a way you can make it more magickal.

Talk to a trusted friend or a therapist, if you have access to one.

Magickal rest to support your emotions

Journalling is a great way to explore your emotions and uncover what you’re really feeling. Helping you to get clear on what you actually need to do and focus on.

Another way to release emotions is to write down how you’re feeling, or write an (unsent) letter to a person or situation that’s bothering you, don’t send the letter, but burn it somewhere safe and suitable. Let your emotions be transformed by the fire.

    Energetic Rest

All day, every day, each activity, interaction and task you do creates an energetic exchange. These invisible ways that we spend our energy can leave us feeling drained without even realising what’s happened.

It’s essential that you learn to be intentional with where you spend your energy, as the phrase goes: ‘When attention goes, energy flows’.

Stop giving your time, energy and attention to things that leave you feeling anxious or depleted.

Magickal rest to support your emotions

Call back your energy and power by grounding your energy, so that you feel centred in your own body, rather that buffeted by the energy and emotions of those around you.

And here’s a second article on ways to ground your energy.

Cleanse your energy of other people’s emotions and expectations by having a salt bath or magickal shower

    Relational Rest

Throughout much of life we have learned to ask: ‘who do I need to be in this situation to be accepted or loved?’

This can lead to a lifetime of taking on roles or wearing masks to ‘fit in’.

Sometimes it’s handy, most of the time it just hides the truth of who you are.

Take a break from being the good girl, the people pleaser, the ‘fixer’. Stop being a chameleon or all-things-to-all-people and let yourself simply be.

Magickal rest to support how you relate to the world

In my book ‘Magickal Knickers and other ways to create a life of intention – Reclaim the Magick of You’ I share how we can create a life on our own terms, a life that celebrates who we are, and that it can start simply by consciously choosing your knickers.

    Magickal Knickers podcast episode

    Social Rest

As fun as it can be meeting people, visiting places and having new experiences, sometimes you just need to slow down and not expend all your energy.

Instead, choose to spend more time with people that really nourish you and celebrate you for exactly who you are.

And if you’re an introvert, ensure you have time alone to recharge.

Magickal rest to support your social interactions

Using the magick of your words, cast a ‘spell’ of ‘no’ as you decline an invitation to prioritise your energy turning inwards to focus on restoring you.

    Sensory Rest

All day long our senses are taking in everything around us. What we see, hear, smell, taste and feel.

As well as what we think of as our traditional five senses, these senses are becoming more refined as we become more attuned to the world around us.

We sense and pick up on so much more both physically and intuitively.

Give your senses a rest by taking a break from bright lights and loud noises.

Close off your notifications on your devices that are designed to catch your attention.

Magickal rest to come back to your senses

Step into the void and surrender to the darkness by resting your senses.

Close your eyes or put on an eye mask. Turn off the any sounds, or wear earplugs or noise cancelling headphones. Lay down and put a blanket over you. And just allow yourself to surrender to the darkness. To deeply rest and be held in the dark.

3 Types of Nourishment You Need to Feel Rested

There are three types of nourishment that work alongside your rest to restore your energy. They involve you doing something, rather than taking a break from something:

    Spiritual Nourishment

What spiritual practices do you have that allow you to connect with ‘something bigger’ than the everyday normalcy of life?

Perhaps these are individual practices or practices you do with a community.

They could include singing, prayer, performing rituals, or sharing stories.

You could also volunteer for something that’s important to you.

Focus on doing an activity that fulfils your sense of purpose.

Magickal nourishment to support your senses

Choose your favourite visualisations or meditations. Remember the meditation isn’t to still your mind, but to rest it.

Take a walk in nature and be in awe of her beauty and the complexity of connections between everything.

Draw an oracle card or use some other form of divination to tap into your intuition and the messages from your higher self.

    Aligned Nourishment

It’s all too easy to lose touch with what’s important to you. Caught up in the should’s and expectations of your family and friends, of your culture and the society around you.

Take some time to notice what beliefs and values are yours, and which have been inherited or absorbed from the world around you.

Then make sure your actions, and the way that you spend your time, energy and resources are aligned with your true needs, desires and values (and not just what you think you should do).

Magickal nourishment to help you live an aligned life

    Create a magickal life philosophy.

    Creative Nourishment

Expressing yourself in a creative way is essential to your well-being.

It’s not about being good at something, but allowing yourself the freedom to create something.

Art, writing, cooking, singing, pursuing a hobby, anything that appeals to you.

You are creating something for the joy of the creative process, not for the finished product, you might not even finish what you’re creating.

Magickal nourishment to support you express your creative self

Craft something to be used in your magickal workings.

    • A mini-altar broom made out of herbs.
    • Enchanted bath salts.
    • Black salts to protect your energy and space.
    • Your very own oracle deck, drawn or collaged.
    • Decorating your own candles for magick.

Make time for each area of your rest throughout the month. You might find you need to focus on one area more than others to support how you feel or what you’re experiencing in your life at any given time.

Experiment with the types of rest and ask yourself:

    1. How did I feel during the rest, did you enjoy it?
    2. How did I feel after the rest, did it nourish or recharge you?

If you haven’t found something that you enjoy or that leaves you feeling recharged, you haven’t tried enough things.

Keep experimenting until you find what works for you.

    Why am I so tired?

    Why am I so tired?

Many people I speak to at the moment feel beyond tired right now. Asking themselves ‘Why am I so tired?’

It’s the kind of tired that a good night’s sleep can’t fix, and yet we still live in hope.

It ends up being another area of our life where we can blame ourselves for not going to bed early enough, not having the right sleep routine, or not being able to stay asleep. Blaming ourselves for the fact that we feel tired, rather than looking at the bigger picture.

Or perhaps it’s easier to blame our sleep (or lack of sleep) for why we’re so tired, rather than looking at the bigger picture.

    ‘Goblin mode’

Today I saw an article from The Huffington Post about Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year; ‘Goblin Mode’.

And whilst initially I smirked at the name, I soon became, very Britishly cross, when I read what it meant.

“Goblin mode” has been chosen by the public as the word of 2022 (the first word ever to be decided by the public) and it seriously says a lot about how we’re all feeling.

The term means “a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects ”.

Huffington Post, ‘Oxford’s Word Of The Year Sums Up Exactly How Over Everything We All Are’ 5th December 2022

Why is prioritising yourself and your need for rest seen as ‘lazy, slovenly or greedy’?

And why is ‘rejecting social norms or expectations’ associated with being a goblin?

The Oxford English Dictionary itself, describes a ‘goblin’ as:

    Goblin noun

    /ˈɡɒblɪn/

    /ˈɡɑːblɪn/

(in stories) a small ugly creature that likes to trick people or cause trouble

We’ve been reduced to ugly tricksters for wanting to rest, retreat and catch our breath.

We’re shamed as it’s implied that we ‘cause trouble’ when we focus on stopping, rather than producing.

More like, ‘surviving and getting through the day mode’

But let’s take a moment to look at the bigger picture.

We’ve survived a pandemic, but as the world initially shut down and withdrew around us, we didn’t know if we would. Perhaps you know people that didn’t.

The world has been forever changed, although we try and go back to ‘normal’.

Currently we find ourselves living under the threat of a nuclear war, as we also try to navigate our way through a cost-of-living crisis, inflation, and a recession. All this that’s reeling on the back of so much political discord of the last few years and so many other current global issues – both humanitarian and environmental.

We’re left wondering if we can trust news sources or if we’re being baited by social media troll farms. And click bait, sensationalism and profits seeming more important than (as much as is ever possible) unbiased and balanced reporting.

Establishments that we once wanted to believe we were able to trust, have been showing us that they aren’t always as ethical as we’d like and need them to be.

We feel let down, more than ever before and don’t know where to turn.

In days gone by, people would’ve turned to their religious and spiritual leaders, but they’re also being exposed for focusing on profits rather than people.

    Running on empty

We’ve been lied to, gaslit, and have been running on empty.

So all in all, I think you’re doing great!

Just to be here, getting through your day, is amazing… all considered.

You may not feel like the aspirational success you see in the magazines or billboards, or the curated feeds of your favourite accounts on social media, but when you look at what you’re living through, and the societal expectations you’re surrounded by, you’re definitely doing better than could ever be expected.

And yes, of course there are still incredible and wonderful things going on in the world, but right now give yourself some slack, you don’t need to be ‘living your best life’ all of the time.

Sometimes good enough is more than enough

Why is there such a pressure, or expectation, to be ‘living your best life’ or being our best selves, and why is that so often this version of ‘best’ associated with achieving and doing?

Can’t we just celebrate ourselves in all of our perfectly, imperfect mess?

Can’t we let good enough, be more than enough.

After all, if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing badly.

    Stop working on yourself

You’re not an endless self-help project.
There’s no perfection or finish line to get to.

You don’t need to try and work our what’s ‘wrong’ with you because you feel tired or emotional.

You’re not a ‘product’ on a production line who’s only value is in being complete/finished. Or who’s worth is measured by how much you can produce.

    You’re human.
Messy, complicated, paradoxical, creative and ingenious.

Of course there are always things that we can improve upon to make our own lives more fulfilling and a little easier. And yes, a few early nights won’t do you any harm.

But don’t consume yourself with thoughts, plans and actions of how to ‘fix’ yourself feeling tired at the expense of actually living your life.

Don’t become so focused on healing, on finding the answer, on being ‘fixed’ that you miss the exquisite beauty of who you are right now.

Who you are, under all of the ‘stuff’ you think you should be, of how you think you should be feeling and how much energy you think you should have.

Accept you will always be both fabulous and flawed.
Instead of thinking you’re broken or doing something wrong, try and see if you can hold space for all of you.

All of your feelings and emotions, especially the big ones and uncomfortable ones.

Of course still get help and support, create nourishing habits that support you, but don’t wait to feel your ’best self’ until you embrace yourself and the life you want to be living.

Perhaps spend less time trying to work out what’s ‘wrong’ with you and what needs ‘fixing’ and put that energy (and more), into discovering, and becoming curious about what lights you up, what makes you feel more like yourself.

Go explore, be curious and see what unexpected parts of you, you meet.

Embrace what you need, even if it goes against what’s expected of you

Embrace your inner ‘Goblin mode’ and see it as a time to get clear on what’s important to you, and what social norms or expectations are really draining your energy.

You can’t fix all of the world’s problems, but you can start by sitting down and becoming curious about what you actually need right now.

What in your immediate and everyday life is draining your energy?

Are there boundaries that need to be established?

Conversations that need to be had?

Habits that need to be stopped or started?

    Passions to be pursued?

It can sometimes feel easier to say that we don’t have time, or are too tired, rather than address the real energy drains in your life.

It’s even easier to feel exhausted when we tap into the collective overwhelm and exhaustion of the people and world around us.

But what do you need, and what can you give yourself, so that you leak less of your time, energy and resources, and therefore will naturally feel more rested (and less depleted)?

It will be more than a good night’s sleep – although that is a good place to start!

Why energetic health is so important

Why energetic health is so important

    Life happens

Through no fault of your own, just through being alive and experiencing life, with its stresses and challenges, your energy system can become clogged and congested – just in the same way that your physical body can become overwhelmed and exhausted if you don’t get enough rest.

    How to feel better

Since the year 2000 I’ve been practising an energy thereapy called Bio-Energetic Kinesiology, and have worked with 1000’s of women, and it never ceases to amaze me just how powerful this work is.

[Learn how eczema and scepticism lead me to train in Bio-Energetic kinesiology READ MORE]

Bio-energetic kinesiology is one way of pinpointing where your energy system is in need of some additional support to remove any ‘congestion’.

Energy clearings gently release the energetic debris that has been created over the years, by using simple techniques, and can bring huge changes to you and your life.

    Energy clearings

Energy clearings are designed to balance the energies of your body so that you feel better, think clearer and feel more aligned with yourself.

Imagine what you could do and achieve if your limiting beliefs, fears and the stories that we regularly tell ourselves were no longer holding you back.

And instead these were replaced with you feeling confident and inspired because you could now access your potential and your inner strength.

You could feel aligned and connected with your purpose and path because they were no longer hidden or clouded by the left over stress and debris of challenging life events.

When we seem to repeat the same old pattern

Often something will happen to us during our life and we (eventually) think we’re over it.

We can rationalise that things ‘happen for a reason’, or perhaps enough time has passed that we get back to everyday life and the event becomes a memory.

    However, this isn’t the case.

Just because intellectually we ‘think’ we’re over something, doesn’t mean that energetically we are.

Our energy system doesn’t follow a linear timeline.

So while you’re trying to reason with yourself: ‘why does this still affect me, it happened years, or even decades ago’.

To your energy system it’s like it happened yesterday – this is how people
can push our buttons, and we can be triggered into a response that’s disproportionate to what we actually experienced in the moment.

To stop this cycle and be truly free of our past events, it’s essential that we rebalance and clear our energy system.

Energetic health is essential for everyone

Just as we clean and nourish our physical body, we must also clean and nourish our energy system.

If you didn’t wash yourself or your clothes for a few months, you know that would leave you feeling less than your best self, so why do we do that with our energy body?

It’s something that should be part of your regular routine.

How to know when your energy system needs some support

Here are some of the common signs that your energy system needs some additional support:

    • You feel tired and lethargic
    • You feel more emotional than usual
    • You’re struggling to make a decision
    • You’re feeling overwhelmed
    • You can’t start or finish a project
    • You keep becoming distracted
    • You seem to ‘absorb’ the emotions of people around you
    • You don’t feel like yourself, but aren’t quite sure why

If you’re experiencing any of these, start here to begin clearing your energy in easy and accessible ways

    Additional benefits

Energy clearings also activate dormant energies in you so that you can access greater vitality and joy, whilst awakening to your true self, your power and magick.

Although most energy work can appear simple. It’s powerful and transformative work.

    Magickal Self-Care Day 6 – Magickal Showers

    Magickal Self-Care Day 6 – Magickal Showers

Welcome back to 12-days of Magickal Self-Care.

Today, on day 6,  we’re going to add some magick to your established morning routine with your bath or shower.

    Adding some magick

I’m going to assume that each morning, or at least frequently you have a bath or a shower, so let’s add some magick and intention to this activity.

It’s something that you’re already doing, so you don’t have to worry about ‘adding’ anything extra to your routine, you’re just going to bring more focused awareness to this activity.

    Washing away negativity

When you have your next shower, as you stand under the water imagine that it’s washing away any of the energetic debris that we explored yesterday.

Anything that’s not yours or energy that is not for your highest good is being washed away, and  then simply imagine it going down the plughole.

Activating what you want more of

Then think about what you’d like to experience more of in your day; peace, joy, love, vibrancy – what colour would you associate with that energy?

For example, you might associate green or blue with peace or red or orange with vibrancy. Now in the shower, image that the water has turned the colour you associated with what you wanted more of and allow yourself to be filled up with that colour and energy.

As you focus on what you want to experience more of, know that you attract more of that energy in, it’s like saying to the universe – ‘thank you, more please’.

    Appreciating your body

Then as you wash your body in the shower, just slow down your experience as you take a moment to connect with each area of your body.

As you wash each body part thank it for all that it does for you.

As you wash your face, thank your senses for their ability to experience the world and the rich pleasure they bring you.

Thank your arms for all that they carry throughout the day and for thy can reach out for.

Thank your hands for all they give and receive and for all that they create.

Thank your legs for their strength and their ability to move you through life and your feet for being able to take a stand for what’s important to you.

Thank your belly for all it absorbs and how it nourishes you.

Thank your skin for giving you a boundary and defining your space in the world.

Really take some time to show gratitude and appreciation for your body.

Even if your body is a source of pain, thank your body for doing the best it can.

    Words of affirmation

Then once out of the bath or shower, apply your favourite, oil, cream or lotion to your body, and as you do, take some time to gently feel and connect with your body.

Notice it’s curves, shape and texture.

As you feel your body, say something kind and loving to yourself.

Start to create a more caring, nourishing relationship with yourself.

It doesn’t matter if you love yourself completely or feel disconnected to your body, you can always improve your relationship.

As you touch your body you might want to say words of affirmation.

You could say ‘I love you’ or ‘I appreciate you’ – however if you don’t love or appreciate yourself, don’t feel guilty about it, instead change the affirmation to:

‘I am open to loving myself’, each day it becomes easier to love myself’.

‘I am open to appreciating myself’, ‘each day I find new things to appreciate about myself’.

By just slightly changing these affirmations, allows yourself to believe the affirmations rather than reject them.

Saying ‘I love myself’ when you don’t just affirms that you don’t actually love yourself, so focus on adding the changes about being open to loving yourself.

    Next-level affirmations (that actually work)

Then one final part to this affirmation.

‘I am open to loving myself… and today I show this to myself by…’

Then insert something small that you will actually do to love yourself.

    It could be:

    Drink some water

    Move or stretch your body

Book the Dr’s appointment you’ve been putting off

So as you’re touching your body and nourishing it with your favourite oil, lotion or cream you’re saying to yourself; ‘I am open to loving myself and today I show myself love by drinking more water.’

‘Each day I love myself more, and today I show myself love by dancing to my favourite songs.’

‘I appreciate my body more and more and today I show myself appreciation by going to bed early.’

Now, you’re not only changing your inner self-talk and affirming more love and compassion for yourself, you’re also proving it to yourself.

When you can prove your affirmations to yourself, by saying you’ll drink more water or go to bed early and you do drink more water and you do go to bed earlier – you start to believe yourself more.

Then you really start to believe that you do love and appreciate yourself and your relationship with yourself becomes stronger and deeper.

It becomes easier to get clear on your wants and needs and it becomes easier for you to prioritise yourself and your self-care.

Don’t forget to come and let us know how you found the practice over in our community.

And I’ll see you after Christmas for the next 6-days of our 12-days of magickal self-care. Have a fabulous holiday season!

    Magickal Self-Care Day 4 – Becoming Present

    Magickal Self-Care Day 4 – Becoming Present

Welcome back to 12-days of Magickal Self-Care.

Today, day 4, I want to focus on becoming present

Yesterday we started to explore the importance of becoming present.

We talked about how to become present it was essential that you feel safe and we focused on feeling safe in your home.

Today I want to talk about being present and feeling safe in your body.

Because when we feel safe, we can be present, present in our body. Present to our own needs.

Being present is where you power lies

Being present, means being full of your own energy and needs, it means being whole – a whole person, not just a shell of yourself. And as I mentioned yesterday, this presence, this wholeness is where you power lies.

The power to prioritise yourself. To say ‘yes’ and ‘no’ with confidence. To say what you mean and ask for what you want. Presence allows you to make the right choices for yourself.

Presence allows you to become more of yourself.

And the world is a richer more beautiful place when you, and all of the other 7.9 billion people we share the world with, can show up in their full ness.

Being you, free from judgement and expectation

Presence requires that you accept and even celebrate who you are, all that you are. Free from judgements and expectations.

It’s about accepting who you are, who you were and who you’re becoming.

And being able to stay present, centred and grounded in your truth every day is something that needs your conscious attention.

I’m sure you’ve encountered people that just have that something about them.

They walk into a room, and you’re drawn to them.

They might not be the most beautiful or attractive person, but something about them holds your attention.

    That’s presence.

Presence brings with it a magnetism that radiates from a person that is happy in their own skin. Confident in who they are.

It doesn’t mean they’re perfect, never fail or don’t occasionally doubt themselves. But they are grounded in themselves knowing their strengths and supporting themselves in all areas of their life.

Perhaps you’ve had a conversation with someone who is really present. It’s a beautiful thing. To know that person is completely present and really hears you. Rather than having a conversation with someone who is distracted, trying to talk over you, finish your sentences, or who has already moved on, and are just their physically.

It’s easy not to be present.

Being productive just means you have more to do

With more and more pressures on your time, energy and resources, growing to-do lists and the expectations of those around you.

The more productive you try and become, the better you try and manage your time, the more you seem to be expected to do.

Fretting about past actions, worrying about what the future holds, wondering how you can fit it all in without making the mistakes of the past, leaves us living in the past or leaning into the future. Neither of which gives us presence.

To be present requires that you are full of your own essence, thoughts, values, dreams and desire.

You need to be ‘full of yourself’

It’s about becoming ‘full of yourself’.

Here in the UK, saying that someone’s ‘full of themselves’ is usually a criticism.

I have a very different take on the matter. As far as I’m concerned:

YOU NEED TO BE FULL OF YOURSELF!

Now, when you read that sentence, you might find yourself reacting and judging me.

    Of course you might.

Because, regardless of where you live now, you were probably encouraged to stay small from the time you were a young child. On top of this, depending on where you grew up, you might have been told:

      • not to get too big for your boots (in the UK)
      • not to act above your station (in Ireland)
      • not to get too big for your britches (in the US)
      • not to be the tall poppy (in Australia or New Zealand)

No doubt every country has some kind of similar saying that encourages people to play small – to be accommodating and selfless.

    Not a shell of yourself

‘Selfless’ – I really hate that word! People say it as if it’s some kind of virtue… but really, why on earth would you celebrate not having a self?!

Surely, it’s the very act of being yourself – your whole self – that makes you the incredible person that you are? How can you be the fully self-expressed person you have the potential to be if you have no self to express?

We can often celebrate the people, often woman, who are ‘so selfless’. The ones that can be relied on to help out at the schools, ferrying the children around to friends, clubs or sports matches, baking cakes for the bake sale, looking after aging parents, checking in on the neighbours, always there when a friend needs them and working a full-time job.

Forgetting your own needs and desire

Yes, they are selfless, they’re in fact so self-less that they’ve forgotten they have their own needs, they have lost their boundaries and can no longer say ‘no’.

The person is celebrated for being self-less, when in fact they’re exhausted and disconnected from any desire they have for themselves, as they just try and make it through the day without losing their shit.

Now, being ‘full of yourself’ doesn’t mean becoming a horrible narcissist who never cares about anyone else. Nor does it mean that you think you’re the ONLY one who deserves to have their needs met. But it does mean that you become discerning about meeting your own needs, and about how you choose to use your time, energy and resources.

Being full of your own energy also means you get used to prioritising your own needs over the expectations and comfort of other people. Of course, sometimes you’ll compromise. Sometimes you will put others first, but when you do it, you’ll do it consciously. It will be your choice as an exception, rather than the default expectation.

Another reason to be ‘full of yourself’ is that if you’re not full of your own hopes and dreams, you leave empty space in your energetic body. And since nature abhors a vacuum… that space is where other people’s energetic judgements and expectations will slip in.

I’ve been a kinesiologist for the last 20+ years, and worked with thousands of women over that time. And I’ve noticed that women who try to be ‘selfless’ almost never believe in or trust themselves. How can they, when they’re trying so hard not to have a self to believe in or trust? With that loss of belief comes a disconnection from their dreams, desires and inner power.

This then muddies the waters of what they want for themselves. Their vision for their ideal life is blurred by everyone else’s energy and desires.

So, even if it doesn’t feel comfortable right now, you need to give yourself permission to become full of yourself. Give yourself permission to take up space with ALL of you: your thoughts, feelings, dreams, desires and physicality.

Of course, you probably won’t become ‘full of yourself’ overnight. But you might gradually start to notice the places where you aren’t full of your own hopes, dreams and desires – and that’s a powerful start.

    Focus on your senses

To start to become full of yourself focus on your senses.

Your senses demand that you are in your body to experience them.

    Right now, notice:

What you can see around you?

    What can you hear?

    What can you feel?

    What can you smell?

    What can you taste?

It steps you out of thinking about the past, or dreaming about the future and puts you right here, in your body in the present.

Do this regularly throughout the day, just as a mini check-in with yourself, a mini sacred pause in your day when you come back to your own centre, present and aware of your own fullness.

It’s like taking a huge sigh, it resets your system as you become present.

Your senses require you get present

There’s a reason when people are having panic attacks, one piece of advice is to name 5 things you can see, 3 things you can touch and two things you can hear. It brings you back into your body and into the present moment.

Here’s a morning routine for you to try – but in fact you can do it anytime throughout your day as it’s just about bringing conscious attention to your senses.

    A sensory experience

In the morning when you wake up, before checking your phone, stretch your arms above your head and feel your body stretch and move.

Place your hands on your heart, close your eyes and take a deep breath in and exhale fully.

Notice the quality of your breath, how deep you can inhale and the sound and force of the exhale.

Then open your curtains and notice what you can see. Notice the colours or any changes that have occurred overnight. What’s the sky like, can you see any birds, animals or people?

Next open the windows and feel the air on your skin. Is it warm or cold? Perhaps it’s a crisp morning, or the sun is starting a warm glow on your skin, or perhaps the wind and rain are whipping around.

Next light some incense or do something that activates your sense of smell, and really enjoy the aroma of whatever you’re inhaling; coffee, perfume, essential oils.

Put on your favourite music or just sit quietly and notice what you can hear. Perhaps it’s something in your home, or something off in the distance.

Using your senses intentionally this way requires that you become present.

And just like any skill, the more we can practice becoming present the easier it becomes.

And as we’ve explored the more you can become present, the more you become aware of your own needs and what you want.

The more you become present you start to notice how the people, events, habits actually impact you.

You’ll start to notice what fills you up and what drains you.

You’ll recognise when you can do more and when you want to stop.

Being present puts you back in the driver seat of your life, instead of being at the mercy of being bombarded with the judgments, wants and expectations of those around you.

So just notice, how connected to your senses do you feel today?

Don’t forget to come and let us know what you’re focusing on over in our community.

And I’ll see you tomorrow for day-5 where I’ll walk you through a practice that will ground you in your energy and bring you back to your own centre – it’s particularly good if you find yourself impacted by the opinions and moods of those around you.

    Cleanse Your Energy with Salt

    Cleanse Your Energy with Salt

    cleanse your energy with salt

Throw Away Thursday is the reminder to cleanse and clear your energy and space.

Today we look at using salt to cleanse your energy.

I love using salt, it’s super simple to get hold of and use, and something you most likely already have in your kitchen!

    To cleanse your space

Inside: Sprinkle salt in the corners of your room, and over the threshold strips to your rooms.

    Leave it there overnight.

The salt will absorb any negative energies.

Vacuum up the salt, leaving your home feeling lighter and clearer, ready for consciously creating what you desire, instead of being stuck in old energy.

Be mindful if you have small children or pets, as you don’t want them eating the salt as it could be harmful to them!

If you do have pets or small children, you could put small bowls of salt around your home, out of their reach.

Outside: You can also sprinkle salt outside of your home. Sprinkle it around the perimeter of your home, or in front of your entrance ways and across the entrance to your home.

That way when people enter your home, they will walk through a ‘cleansing threshold’, leaving much of their energetic debris ‘at the door’.

The elements will naturally sweep the salt away for you.

When using salt, we are talking about a sprinkle, you do not need to pour thick lines of salt around your home.

    To cleanse your body

Add some sea salt to your bath. Epsom salts work really well too. But be mindful if you have high blood pressure!

Not only is salt really relaxing to add to your water, it softens your skin and draws out energetic debris from your energy system.

As you soak in your bath, let anything that’s not aligned with your highest good be gently dissolved by the salt water.

When you pull the plug out of your bath, feel any negativity being washed away with the water.

If you don’t have a bath, you could do the same by soaking your feet in a bowl of salt water.
