๐ Purpose
Have you ever found yourself drawn to the same type of situations or people, pondering, “Why does this keep happening to me?”
Life has a rhythm, an ebb and flow, often characterised by patterns, both subtle and overt.
This exploration invites you to shine a light on these rhythms, making the familiar unfamiliar once again.
It’s a dive into understanding the โwhyโ behind the recurrence, and perhaps, learning how to dance to a new beat or even appreciate the old ones.
After all, as the saying goes, history doesn’t always repeat itself, but it often rhymes.
What you’ll need
A reflective mind, a journal or notebook, a calm space where you can think uninterrupted, and a willingness to venture into the patterns of your past.
Instructions
1. Chronicles of Consistency
Begin by thinking about various aspects of your life – relationships, work, personal habits, reactions to certain events, etc.
Are there any patterns you’ve noticed?
List these down and start to become curious about their pattern.
Examples:
Professional Patterns
You might notice that at every job, you tend to clash with a co-worker or feel overshadowed in group settings.
Reflection: What are the common factors in these situations?
Is it tied to a particular type of task, a certain kind of environment, or maybe a personal insecurity about expertise?
Relationship Rhythms
Do your romantic relationships often start intensely passionate and then fizzle out quickly?
Or perhaps you often feel like the caretaker in your friendships.
Reflection: Dive into your past โ perhaps there’s a past relationship, maybe even from childhood, that set a certain precedent for how you approach love or friendship.
Habitual Hurdles
Every year, you set a resolution to become fitter, but by mid-year, your motivation wanes.
Reflection: Is there a deeper reason for this beyond just ‘losing motivation’?
Maybe past experiences, like being teased as a child for being unathletic, have unconsciously impacted your relationship with fitness.ย
Recurring Reactions
You become unusually anxious when faced with unpredictable situations, even if they’re minor.
Reflection: Delve into when you first started feeling this way.
Was there an event in your past where unpredictability led to a negative outcome?ย
Financial Footprints
You notice a pattern of avoiding looking at your bank statement, even when you know itโs necessary.
Reflection: Is this avoidance tied to feelings of inadequacy or past experiences where money was a source of stress?ย
2. Emotional Landmarks
Reflect on how these repeated situations made you feel.
Was there a dominant emotion or set of emotions that accompanied them?
3. Patterns’ Protagonists
Consider the characters involved in these patterns.
Without attaching blame, identify any common behaviours or traits that stood out across different scenarios.
For each pattern youโve identified, ask yourself:
What is its root cause?
How has it impacted your decisions and emotions?
Is there a lesson to be learned or a change to be made?
4. Lessons in the Loop
For each recurring theme, consider what it taught you or how it shaped you.
Were there lessons or personal growth from these repetitions?
5. Breaking the Chain or Celebrating It
Contemplate whether you’d like to change these patterns or if they’re something to be celebrated.
If a change is desired, note down proactive steps you could take to alter the rhythm.
If it’s a pattern to be celebrated, note down ways to appreciate or enhance it further.
6. Journal the Journey
Document your insights, feelings, and reflections.
How do these patterns influence your present?
How do they shape your perceptions, decisions, and interactions?
Patterns, like old songs, often carry stories of our past, echoing lessons, sentiments, and memories.
Some we might wish to change, while others we’d like to keep close to our heart.
By recognising and understanding these patterns, you’re taking the first step in orchestrating your own life’s symphony.
Remember, life’s patterns are like the notes in music; it’s up to us to create the melody.
Hereโs to finding harmony in the echoes of our past! ๐ผ๐๐
