The Importance of Grounding

Grounding may not sound very sexy or exciting. Let’s face it – floating off to other realms and dimensions to get inspiration can seem like much more fun.

But we need to ground ourselves to actually manifest all the inspiration, dreams and ideas we receive within the physical world.

Being grounded and rooted allows you to show up in the world with presence, power, certainty and clarity.

In fact, being grounded is the only way to begin consciously creating the magic and change that you want to experience in your life, communities and world.

Yes, you’ll get ideas and inspiration for your goals and desires when you’re connected to your Higher Self. But the real magic can only happen when you bring that energy back down and root it into the Earth.

That’s why bringing the energy of your magic into reality requires you to root that energy (and yourself).

Only then can the things you want manifest in a way you can physically experience.

And the way to make that happen is by grounding yourself here on Earth.

Think about a tree.

Many trees – especially trees like oaks – grow phenomenally high. When you look at a massive tree, though, you don’t see its root system, which is often twice as big as its canopy.

After all, the bigger and stronger a root system, the more it can hold above the ground. If a mighty oak has an enormous canopy and tiny little roots, one strong breeze could bring it crashing down.

Rooting creates strong foundations for the tree. That way, when storms and winds come or people climb it, it can remain standing strong and tall in its space. It can continue to grow and support everything that it looks after – its fruits and acorns, its squirrels and badgers and foxes, and everything else in its ecosystem.

So, although you can’t generally see a tree’s roots, they’re just as important (if not more so) as everything you see above the ground.

And it’s the same for you. You also need deep roots to be able to support yourself, your own ecosystem, and all of the different things that are important to you.

You need strong, sturdy roots to stay grounded. This prevents everyday life, experiences, people and events knocking your energy out of balance, which could leave you feeling overwhelmed or doubting yourself and your choices.

When you think of grounding think of the phrase ‘coming back to your senses’ – as that’s quite literally what you are doing.

‘Come back to your senses’

You are coming back to your senses so that you are ‘in’ your body and able to feel grounded and centred. And you’re also coming back to your senses in the fact that you can think more clearly and make the best choices for you.

When we’re not grounded and are ‘out of our senses’, we can make decisions that we end up regretting. We can be unduly influenced by those around us. We can make decisions from a place of shame, fear or judgment.

We don’t trust ourselves and can’t connect with our intuition.

So, let’s get you ‘back to your senses’!

Engage all of your senses

A quick and simple way to ground yourself is to engage all of your senses.

A beautiful way to do this is to get yourself into nature, go for a hike, walk barefoot on the grass, spend time with the trees.

But really anywhere will do, even sat at your office desk.

Spend some time noticing what you can hear, smell, feel, even taste.

Engage all of your senses and really pay attention to them.

Pick up a stone (or solid object) and hold it in your hand. Connect to the density and texture of it.

‘Shock’ your senses

One of the quickest ways you can ground your energy it to have a plunge pool or a cold shower – but that’s not always possible, so a quicker way is to bite into a large slice of lemon. That sharp, sour tastes brings you right back into your body!

Root Yourself

You could also image roots growing out the bottom of your feet, that reach deep down into the earth beneath you.

Also a fun way, it to wear red socks – yes, really!
