If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing badly

If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing badly

Let’s talk about…. Trust

It’s a big one!

Just today in my group a question was asked about doing something the ‘right’ way.

The question was in relation to completing rituals.

Was this person doing it ‘wrong’ if they were doing it their own way and not doing it the EXACT way it had been prescribed.

They even questioned that perhaps they were just being lazy by not wanting to do the ritual in the way it had been set out.

Which actually had us chuckling at the hashtag #lazywitch – or maybe that was us cackling!

How many times have you found yourself in a similar situation?

Questioning yourself.

Double guessing yourself.

Going against your inner guidance system.

Berating yourself.

Making yourself wrong.

Thinking that you weren’t good enough/didn’t have enough experience/weren’t dedicated enough…

PHEW! The list goes on!

But what if… instead of the exhaustive list of the different ways you can make yourself and your way of doing something wrong, and by assumption believing that somebody else has it right…

What if you trusted yourself?

Trusted your feelings.

Trusted that voice inside that wants to do something your own way.

No questioning, second guessing, calling yourself lazy.

You just did it your way.

Some days this looked like playing by the rules.

Other days it meant making up your own rules entirely.

But always coming from the place of trusting yourself.

How would your life be different?

How could you better use that exhaustive energy of questioning yourself?

Even better… how much more fun could you have, how much more present could you be for yourself and others, if you just let yourself do it your way?

As I burst into song, singing in an overly dramatic fashion… “I did it myyyyyyyyyy waaaaayyyyyy”

And if you were wondering what my thoughts were on the rituals….

Yes, I trained for two years as a Priestess.

Yes, it was a year ago that I dedicated as a Priestess of Cerridwen on the shores of Lake Bala.

Yes, I can put together beautiful rituals and understand the importance of them.

And yes, I often do things my own way lol.

The thing about rituals is that there’s magic in doing something the way in which everyone else does it. It connects you to the collective energy, and you add to the collective energy.

However, if it’s too cumbersome, long-winded or complicated, you’re likely not to do it as often as you’d like, if at all.

So, use the ritual as a base for your own ritual.

Take what works for you and honour the process.

It’s better that you show up for something, than do nothing.

If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing badly.

That wasn’t a typo: If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing badly.

Think about that for a moment…

We’ve often been taught the opposite.

However, if it’s worth doing, it’s worth just doing it, even if it’s only a small and half-hearted effort (unless it’s something like brain surgery – then I want you to do your absolute best!!)

But if it’s a ritual. Healthy eating. Exercising. Starting to write your book. Learning a new language. Supporting your community.

Whatever your heart is calling you to do, just start and do it your way.

Trust you’re being called to do it for a reason.

And trust that your way will unfold perfectly just for you!

Hubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble – A metaphor for life

Hubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble – A metaphor for life

Hi my name’s Rebecca and I love cauldrons.

Seriously, I really do love cauldrons (almost as much as I love trees!), and have lots (and lots, and lots…) of them, is there such a thing as too many cauldrons?

I have cast iron ones I use for rituals and ceremony, one’s that I burn incense in, some that hold candles, others that are purely decorative, and some that I use to store herbs, crystals, twigs and stones in.

I love how they’re the perfect blend of practical, magical, and transformational, as well as being the ultimate metaphor for life.

Practical:

First and foremost they’re a saucepan.

They’re designed to cook and create food that nourishes and nurtures you.

And when they’re not simmering with a hearty soup or stew, they’re perfect for storing things in.

Magical:

They’ve long been associated with magic, creating potions, setting intentions and releasing old patterns.

Cauldrons appear in many Celtic myths along side Goddesses such as Cerridwen and Brigid, and can a fairy tale witch who doesn’t have a cauldron, even call herself ‘Witch’?

Transformational:

A cauldron is just a vessel. Empty and containing nothing but potential. But just as if you were making a soup, it’s a space for blending ingredients together, to make something richer and more flavourful than the individual ingredients by themselves.

And a Metaphor for Life:

Life is practical.

We live in the world in our physical body, and there are certain things we need to do in order to survive. We can’t escape them, we just need to do them… They’re not always exciting or overly sexy, but if we want to continue to live, we just need to get on and do them, such as breathing, nourishing ourselves, taking care of our health and resting.

It’s also magical.

Life is filled with awe and wonder and things that just feel… well… magical. Whether it’s watching a breathtaking sunrise with the birds serenading you with their dawn chorus, the tender touch of your lover as you fall in love for the first time, or having a tiny baby gaze at you as they hold on to your finger.

Some things in life are so magical they can’t be explained, they have to be experienced to be understood.

And life is most definitely transformational.

We live a life that is full of potential. Our choices, experiences and circumstances forge us into the people we are and the people that we’re becoming. Nothing stays the same… ever. And the more we can embrace the transformation the richer our experience of life becomes.

And the REAL MAGIC happens when you can embrace the entire cauldron of life!

When you can show up fully.

When you can bring your whole self to your experience of life – the ‘good’, the ‘bad’ and the ‘ugly’, and not just the ‘pretty and socially acceptable parts, you get to create a richer, heartier and more flavourful experience of life.

When you blend the mundane with the magical, when you get to own all of yourself, your quirks and your own unique blend of magic. You get to experience amazing transformation in all areas of your life as you begin to embody your own true, and very unique, essence.

To begin to connect with your essence, become curious about these questions:

What is your unique magic; how do you see the world differently from those around you?

What part of yourself are you ready to embrace more of?

And finally, what are you slightly obsessed with, or of course fully obsessed with 😉 , or is it just me with the obsessions?

Take these answers and add them to your own ‘cauldron of being’, and watch your life become more magical!

Break the SPELL and Change Your Story

Break the SPELL and Change Your Story

I don’t know about you, but I love a good story!

Escaping into other worlds, learning more about other people’s lives, being inspired by other people’s courage, determination, and dreams.

Hours can slip past me in deep conversation or lost in a book.

Some of my favourite gifts as a child were books that I still have today, with a gorgeous hardcover of ‘Wind in The Willows’ being the first that comes to mind – and that was a gift over 30 years ago! No wonder I’m the book giving Auntie!

Stories are important

They define our worlds and are what make us who we are.

We have been sharing stories since time began.

Stories are our maps to navigate through our lives.

We tell stories to make sense of events that we experience.

We share stories to connect with other people.

We use stories to learn from each other, to inspire the next person, to show them what’s possible and what we can overcome.

Stories can inspire us and spur us on to achieve great feats… but today I want us to look at the other stories, the stories that can keep us stuck in old patterns, frustrating us, and preventing us from claiming our dreams and fulfilling our potential.

These patterns that don’t serve us, these stories that keep us stuck and believing in things that are no longer relevant or true, are what I call SPELLs.

Not SPELLs that change pumpkins into royal carriages, or mice into horses, but SPELLs that cast their enchantment over us nonetheless.

Stories can become ‘nightmares’

As we grow up, we grow out of the stories of believing in Father Christmas and the Tooth Fairy, but some stories we don’t grow out of, we keep them and they become our own personal mythology.

These stories go into our personal SPELLbook, and this SPELLbook governs the rules that enchant and shape our life. They are so much a part of us, that we don’t even notice when we’re invoking them.

These SPELLs are often created for a reason, as a way of protecting us, of keeping us safe when we didn’t know any better, when we didn’t have the resources, knowledge or understanding to make different choices.

For over two decades I’ve been working with (mainly) women who are ready to change an area of their life – sometimes all of it… and at the heart of these changes is the need to break these SPELLs that have been set up/cast over them.

SPELLs that make them feel that they’re not good enough, are unloveable, are too much or not enough, the SPELL’s that keep them thinking they don’t have any power.

SPELLs are often set up in childhood, SPELLs are cast over us by the media, and SPELLs are kept in place by society and expectations…

I want to tell you that you that it’s totally possible to break these SPELLs! And it can be easy.

You can control the narrative

I want to remind you that you DO HAVE the power, you ARE more than good enough, you are totally loveable just as you are.

I want you to know that you are PERFECT in your imperfectness!

This isn’t about changing you, or fixing you! How can it be, you’re already perfect and you are certainly not broken.

This is about helping you to remember exactly who you are!

Watch the video that explains more about this process (and if you know me… you know I love an acronym… and yes of course ‘SPELL’ is one too)

After the storm has passed

After the storm has passed

“Storms don’t come to teach us painful lessons, rather the are meant to wash us clean” – Shannon L. Alder

The other day I was scrolling through facebook, when something caught my eye.

It was an article about a prehistoric forest that had been uncovered after a recent storm.

When I first saw the photo, I thought, “Wow, I’d love to see that”, and was about to scroll past, when curiosity (and a little voice inside) got the better of me and I read the full article:

“A prehistoric forest which was buried under water and sand more than 4,500 years ago has been uncovered by Storm Hannah.

The petrified trees lie between Ynyslas and Borth in Ceredigion county.

The forest has become associated with a 17th Century myth of a sunken civilization known as ‘Cantre’r Gwaelod’, or the ‘Sunken Hundred’.

It is believed the area was a once-fertile land and township protected by floodgates.

The remains of the forest’s trees, preserved in the local peat, have been exposed by low tides and high winds.” – BBC Website

Borth! I couldn’t believe it, for some reason I’d assumed the photo had been taken abroad, but Borth is my closest beach – it’s still over an hour away, but it’s an area I’ve visited regularly the whole time I’ve lived in Herefordshire – about 7 years now.

I quickly looked at the date of the article, it was only a few days old, the chance of the trees still being visible was high, so with the call of trees and the beach, how could I resist a trip to see for myself!

Even low tide aligned with a perfect day to the beach.

It was incredible to see.

I chatted to a few other people walking around the forest remains, one woman had travelled three hours to visit, and another 2 hours.

I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve visited these beaches, and I had never known about the trees.

Yet a chance scroll through facebook, a trust in the curiosity to read more, the divine timing of coming across the article and the perfect time of low tide, allowed me to combine a few of my favourite things; trees, beaches and adventure.

The uncovering of the trees reminded me of the power of the storms to reveal what we didn’t know was right under our noses.

The same is true for life-storms.

Not all storms are here to destroy us or tell us to turn back and seek shelter, many are here to reveal more of our truth to us.

In the SHEro’s Journey, the second stage of the four part journey is the Significant Challenge. It’s during this stage that we can feel as we’re in the eye of the storm, feeling tested to our limits.

Some people see this as a time to turn back, or a sign that they’re on the wrong path.

But like storm Hannah and the prehistoric forest, sometimes the storms are here to reveal the treasure that lies within.

The challenges of life storms give you a chance to review your choices, to decide how committed you are to what you’re after. They offer you the opportunity to grow and become stronger, to deepen your resolve so that you can move closer to and achieve what you desire.

Storms can reveal to you what was once hidden, in the case of the beach it was the prehistoric forest, but what treasure do the storms reveal about you?

Intuitive wisdom for the year ahead – The Omen Days

Intuitive wisdom for the year ahead – The Omen Days

I love winter.

I love the darkness.

I love being snuggled inside as the wind howls and the rain beats down.

I love cold crisp winter walks, as the sun goes down, and I’m wrapped up in hat and soft scarf.

I love the darkness.

Yes, I know I said that twice, but it’s worth repeating.

I love the darkness.

And yet…

We are taught to fear the darkness, we’re told it’s where the monsters live.

The darkness is wild and untamed.

It can’t be controlled.

It certainly can’t be trusted.

We do everything we can to stay in the light.

And yet…

The darkness holds the magic and mystery.

It’s the darkness of the womb space that holds the potential for growth.

It’s the darkness of the soil that holds, nourishes and nurtures the tiny seed, so that it can grow.

The tiny cells become the little baby, and the acorn becomes the mighty oak.

It’s the darkness of the night that holds us and restores us as we sleep.

It’s the darkness of closed eyes that allow us to daydream and savour the moment.

It’s from the darkness that we connect with our intuition, the whispers of our wisdom rising up trying to get our attention.

Yet this darkness isn’t trusted.

It’s feared, dismissed, pushed to one-side.

The darkness is much like the energy of a woman.

Deep, intuitive, wild and untamed.

Nourishing, nurturing, and with the ability to birth; to birth ideas, books, art, creativity, and in some cases children.

The wild darkness goes hand in had with being a woman.

Yet in both cases their power can be feared.

They can be dismissed and pushed aside, told their wisdom is not to be trusted.

Yet as a woman our power is in the darkness.

And this time of the year, that power is heightened.

The connection to  the darkness, and your intuitive ability is at a peak.

The darkness of winter is governed by the Wise Woman SHEro, her landscape is the Red Tent and her symbol is the cauldron.

The Goddess associated with the Wise Woman SHEro is Cerridwen, the Celtic Goddess of wisdom and transformation, she is the Keeper of the Cauldron.

Cauldrons are first and foremost a vessel to create warm nourishing food.

They also represent the wisdom and transformative powers of the womb space. The bringing of everything together to create something richer and more flavourful – whether that’s food or experiences.

During these dark days, it’s time to connect more deeply with your own deep inner wisdom.

To bring all of you together, to create a richer, deeper experience of yourself and life.

To remember your inherent power.

To celebrate the wild, untamable darkness within.

To celebrate the unexplainable, the things that shouldn’t make sense, but just feel ‘right’.

This is particularly true of your intuition.

And this got me thinking…

I can remember years ago being told about using oracle cards on the 12 Day of Christmas for guidance for the year ahead, each of the twelve days representing the coming 12 months.

I couldn’t remember the details, so turned to trusted google and came across this article by Caitlin Matthews:

In it she explains why the 12 days of Christmas are so special;

“In Brittany and in Wales, the Twelve Days of Christmas, which mark the intercalary days of the year, are called ‘the Omen Days,’ and they have a special purpose. ‘Intercalary days’ are really the days left over from reckoning up the solar year and, in calendars throughout the world and at different times, they are special because they are considered to be ‘the days out of time.’ It is in this interval between the ordinary count of days that gods are born or conceived in many different mythologies.”

She then goes on to explain that for each of the 12 days of Christmas tradition would have people step into nature and notice the omens, the signs from nature, and that would indicate what was to come.

On the 1st day – Boxing day, the 26th December, you would go out into nature and notice what you notice – perhaps a shape in the clouds, the branches of the trees, a colour shining brighter, a hardy flower surviving the cold, the robust red berries, a feeling, a whisper on the breeze, an animal or bird that you hear or see, and that would represent what was to come for the month of January.

Then the 2nd day  – the 27th December, you would do the same and that would represent the energy for February.

etc. etc. for the 12 days and the 12 corresponding months.

The idea isn’t that you google what the signs mean – as that is someone else’s interpretation.

This is a time to sink down into your own wisdom and notice what the signs or ‘omens’ mean to you.

What is nature communicating with you?

When you do this with focussed intention, even if you only have 10 minutes, it’s fascinating what you can learn.

Step outside, wherever you are, and before you walk or look up to the sky, down at the pavement/sidewalk, ask that you be shown your omen or sign for the month, so on the 26th December, you would be asking for January.

And then look, listen and feel. Use all of your senses and notice what you notice.

Trust your intuition.

Trust the nudges, the feelings.

Pay attention.

Are you making it up? Does it really matter?

Your intuition is communicating with you, it’s time to listen.

Then make a note of the message, the signs.

Trust your first thoughts, go with what feels aligned.

It might not make sense straight away, it might percolate and bubble in your cauldron of wisdom, and throughout the day it will unfold.

You may wish to draw an oracle card for additional guidance – but again, leave the guidebook alone, and notice what YOU get from the card.

Treat each of the 12 days of Christmas as a chance to deepen your relationship with your rich darkness, your intuition.

A chance to remember your whole self, and not just the sanitised, socially acceptable version of yourself.

Treat this an an experiment in listening deeply.

Of trusting yourself.

Of knowing that you are held by the dark womb of the universe.

The journey of coming home to yourself.

Most of all be curious and have fun!

Knotting your intentions into being

Knotting your intentions into being

This weekend I hosted a Red Tent here in my yurt in Herefordshire.

These always feel like extra special events where women gather to share time and space with women who ‘get them’.

It’s a time and space where you can let your guard down and relax into the truth of who you are.

In preparation for the events I always have an outline of my intentions for the day, but it often unfolds into its own perfect form.

I hold the sacred space and it’s important to me that women leave feeling nurtured and nourished, (I often do this with food too…although I tell people to bring some food with them, inevitably I make some food too – sometimes it’s raw vegan lemon cheesecake, this time it was hearty vegetable soup…)

I love to hold space for women.

To create a space where you can feel held, witnessed and heard.

If you’re into astrology I have my moon in Cancer – so I am The nurturer, you will always be safe and looked after with me…

A couple of weeks ago I held two virtual Re-Enchant Your Life retreats for my group The Sacred Grove where we reviewed the year, reconnected to what was important to us and then re-envisioned our future.

I’ve always found it important to make a conscious check-in with ourselves.

Too often we can find ourselves going through the motions, and then feeling frustrated and cranky, and not really understanding that the frustration comes from living a life that’s out of alignment with your energy and values.

I truly wish this was taught schools, it certainly wasn’t when I was at school… we learnt how to be ‘good girls’, to not make a fuss, and to focus on our grades.

We were taught nothing about connecting with our own emotional or spiritual well-being.

Nothing about focusing on and developing our individual skills, especially our non-academic skills.

Nothing on finding our own answers within and learning how to be a Sovereign woman – We were taught that answers always came from an authority outside of ourselves.

And we were certainly not taught anything on the value of pausing and reflecting. It was all strive, strive, strive.

In fact if this was mentioned, it would probably have been considered ‘indulgent’ and not at all important. It was much more important (or maybe that should be easier…) if we were compliant and followed the ‘rules’.

This ‘education’ not only comes from schools, but from our families, and society in general, which makes it even more important than ever to stop and pause, and to notice those areas of frustration.

Those areas of frustration are your soul and spirit telling you that you are ready to expand into something bigger, but as yet you aren’t aware of the new rules or framework on how to do this, as you are still operating on the ‘good girl’ software.

So I chose to hold the Re-Enchant Your Life retreats at this time of year, as it’s the perfect energy to take that moment to consciously reflect on what’s worked for you and what hasn’t. What’s actually yours and what are the expectations of others.

It’s a chance to honestly notice what you’re doing and why, so that you can decide what you’re carrying forward and what you’re letting go of.

We then took the time to connect with what was actually important to us, so that we could set intentions for the year ahead that were in alignment with who we were becoming.

Some of these intentions looked like goals for people, others looked like values and feelings that they wanted front and centre of their life, often it was a combination of the two.

Importantly, there was no right or wrong way to do this, only the way that felt expansive.

It’s simple, but very powerful work.

To build on this, I thought it would be great to then quite literally weave these intentions into being.

So during the Red Tent we created Witches Ladders, or as I renamed them ‘SHEro Intention Ladders’ – these are simply braided ribbons, that with each knot and weave of the ribbons, you activate with your clear intentions (you can see mine below on the right).

We picked out ribbon, cords, and threads in colours that activated our intentions.

Then we chose objects to weave into our ribbons and threads that were symbolic of our intentions. We used crystals, feathers, ogham sticks, dried fruit, charms, feathers and beads.

We then braided everything together, focusing completely on our intentions, so that we could weave them into being.

We did this in silence, held in the sacred space of the Red Tent.

The energy of the tent was completely different.

Usually it’s filled with conversation and laughter.

This was reverence, sacred, intentional.

You could feel the magic weaving it’s way round the tent.

These ladders once completed are hung up, placed on your altar, on your desk, in your bag, as something tangible to remind you of and reconnect you to your intentions.

They can be used for meditation, much like a rosary.

These are working tools, not just something pretty to be forgotten about.

This is practical magic!

Fun, intentional, sacred and joyful.

Then after we completed our ladders, we drew oracle cards for the year.

We asked the cards for what action we needed to take for each month to bring our intentions into being.

We then asked the herb, plant and tree cards, what herb/plant/tree we need to work with that month to support us and our intentions.

I usually draw cards to give overall guidance for the month, but it felt more relevant to ask what action we needed to take.

And I always trust my feelings and intuition! After all that is what I hold space for women to do too – to completely trust and believe in themselves!

As early evening drew in and it became darker, we snuggled under blankets, and by the light of just the candles and fairylights we listened to stories told and sang by Carolyn Hillyer, and ate mince pies…

I think it’s fair to say that I create events that I want to attend lol…

There is something so magical about giving yourself the time and the space to create sacred tools that I suggested to the members of The Sacred Grove, that we start to make these tools with each of the Sabbats, the earth celebrations, in our virtual Red Tent.

Members of The Sacred Grove are all around the world, just because they couldn’t come to my home, I didn’t want to miss out on such a beautiful event.

And guess what? They loved the idea, so that’s what we’ll be doing too!

If you’d love to join us and learn more about this amazing community, you can do so here: Join us in the sacred sisterhood

And if you’re wondering how people from all round the world join together to make sacred tools….

It’s really very easy! Before the event I would give you everything that you need to know and of course including a list of what you need to bring with you. Then at the time of the event, I will be in my red tent and use a video conferencing system called Zoom, so that you can join me in this sacred space.

From there everything is the same as if we were all together, except at the end you won’t get to try any of my delicious soup (but I would of course share the recipe!)

Here’s your invite again to join us weave magic in The Sacred Grove
