Are you eating the poisoned apple?

Are you eating the poisoned apple?

What can a 200 year old tale teach you about reclaiming your own power?

Quite a bit it seems…

Discovering that she was no longer the fairest in the land, the evil Step-Mother wanted to ‘right’ this ‘wrong’. Making a poisonous brew she dipped a red apple in it, and set out to deliver her plan.

Disguising herself as an old lady, she tracked down Snow White, who was hiding from her in cottage deep in the forest.

Going against her first instincts not to let the old woman in her cottage, Snow White did, and accepted the gift of the bright, shiny apple.

Once she took a bite of the apple, Snow White collapsed to the floor, falling into a deep sleep.

When the seven dwarfs returned home, they were so distressed at seeing Snow White laying on the floor that they built her a glass coffin, and laid her in front of their cottage.

Most people are familiar with the tale of Sleeping Beauty. The beautiful, and innocent maiden, who fell prey to the jealousy of another.

You might not be living in exile in a cottage in the woods with 7 dwarfs… but is there an aspect of yourself, or your life, that that you’re running away from or avoiding?

Once Upon a Time: A Wicked Witch with Cabin Fever

The following story really happened, no names have been changed to protect the innocent or otherwise…

It was just another day at my practice, I had a diary full of characters looking for answers, and I was ready to work my magic as I had been doing for decades, but somehow today felt more magical than usual…

I go into the waiting room looking for my next client, but there’s no one there. The receptionist explains this session will be done via Skype.

‘Hello is it Ms Wicked Witch of the East?’

‘No my dear it’s pronounced Wick-ay, it’s a silent ‘d’, I’ve no idea what my parents were thinking, but it’s better than ‘Maleficent’ that they were considering, it’s so common these days’.

‘Oh I’m sorry’, I say blushing at my mistake, ‘How can I help you today?’

‘Well my Dear, ever since a terrible incident a few years ago, I’ve not been able to go outside.’

The following story really happened, no names have been changed to protect the innocent or otherwise…

It was just another day at my practice, I had a diary full of clients looking for answers, and I was ready to work my magic as I had been doing for decades, but somehow today felt more magical than usual.

When I first saw my client Ms S. White, I was instantly struck by her beauty. She was breath-taking, but as I looked closer, I could see a deep sadness in her eyes.

She appeared to glide into my room, and she gracefully sat down, crossing her ankles in such a way, it looked as if she was posing for a magazine shoot.

‘Rebecca’ she said in such a gentle and melodious voice, that I imagined she could summon the birds and animals, ‘I’ve come to see you because I feel like something is missing from my life, I feel like I want more, but I can’t really put it into words’.

It was just another day at my practice, I had a diary full of characters looking for answers, and I was ready to work my magic as I had been doing for decades, but somehow today felt more magical than usual…

‘Ms Hood, please take a seat’, I said as I welcomed my first client of the day into my room.

‘Red, call me Red, my real name is Bethany, but my Grandma always called me Red and it’s kinda stuck.’

‘How can I help you today Red?’

‘Oh I just don’t know really, I’m not even sure why I’m here’ she trailed off…

I was just about to ask a question, when she wailed:

Is gratitude stopping your flow of abundance?

Is gratitude stopping your flow of abundance?

Here’s why I stopped being grateful (kind of…)

I stopped forcing myself to be grateful a long time ago.

You see, being grateful always felt quite heavy to me.

It’s in all the self help books and workshops. It’s the holy grail of attracting more abundance into your life.

Be grateful, to attract more things to be grateful for.

It makes perfect sense!

However, what you’re actually doing is aligning yourself with, and attracting the vibration and energy behind ‘feeling grateful’, and for me grateful has always felt a little dense and heavy energetically.

It took me ages to work out why, as no one wants to think of themselves as un-grateful! And I certainly didn’t feel that way.

But yet the word grateful didn’t sit comfortably with me.

What Gratitude means to me

Then echoes of my childhood rang through my ears:

‘You should be grateful, there are people who have it much worse than you!’

‘Eat it all up. Be grateful you have anything to eat, there are children starving in Africa

‘Be grateful that your father isn’t here, he wouldn’t have let you off so lightly’

I’d been bought up where gratitude was a double edged sword.

Of course I was glad things weren’t worse than they were, or that I wasn’t starving in Africa, or I wasn’t in even more trouble, but these seemed more like guilt trips than reasons to be joyous.

Gratitude felt like it was tainted with the energy of struggling to overcome something. Especially when I found myself thinking:

‘I’m so grateful that exams over, only two more to go.’

‘I’m so grateful that I didn’t fall over in from of all those people and make a fool of myself.’

Gratitude was an expression of thanks that felt closed and heavy, it felt like overcoming a battle.

So when I was told to keep a gratitude diary, or make lists of things I was grateful for before I went to bed, my heart sank a little.

I did it, as I didn’t want to appear ungrateful, but it didn’t bring the joy I expected it to, or that I’d heard about.

Moving from gratitude to appreciation

One day I suddenly realised that I didn’t want to be grateful for things that happened (or didn’t happen), I wanted to appreciate them!

Is there much difference between being grateful and appreciating something?

Well to me there is.

Appreciation, feels much lighter, joyful and like a choice I make – not one that’s forced upon me (or I’d feel guilty).

Appreciation is the act of recognising that something is valuable or important, and feels deeper than just giving thanks.

To me appreciation feels much more freeing, much lighter, much more open.

It may seem like a simple thing, even something that isn’t really that important.

Do it your way

But what it highlighted to me is the importance of doing things your way.

Just because something worked for your friend, the latest guru, or best selling book, doesn’t mean it will work for you. As you and your experiences are unique to you.

Your beliefs and how they were created are unique to you.

If you ever find that something isn’t working for you, just ask yourself why.

Think about what that activity really means to you, not just about the activity itself. Break it down in to the words being used if you have to…

I completely agree with the concept of gratitude journals, but for me I needed to tweak it slightly – an appreciation journal feels much more spacious and aligned for me.

What works for you?

Why I burnt my vision board

Why I burnt my vision board

For as long as I can remember, and we’re talking decades, I’ve created vision boards, I’ve encouraged others to do the same.

They’re fun to do, cutting out inspiring pictures and quotes, decorating them with glitter and stickers, playing with scissors and glue, what’s not to love?

But today I burnt my vision board. And I won’t be making any more
